AHPP AWARDS $36,000 IN CEMETERY PRESERVATION GRANTS

LITTLE ROCK—Governor Asa Hutchinson announced today that the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program has awarded $36,058 in Historic Preservation Restoration Grants for historic cemeteries in four counties, AHPP Director Frances McSwain announced today.

Grant recipients are:

* Cato Historic Church and Cemetery, Inc., $9,999 to level, reset, restore and clean monuments at Frenchman’s Mountain Cemetery at Sherwood in Pulaski County

* Washington County Cemetery Preservation Group, $9,999 for site clearing, an archeological survey and stone restoration at Black Oak Cemetery at Greenland in Washington County

* City of Van Buren, $7,980 to restore five monuments at Fairview Cemetery at Van Buren in Crawford County

* Mississippi County Historical and Genealogical Society, $8,080 to level, reset, restore and clean monuments at Violet Cemetery at Osceola in Mississippi County.

Grants of $5,000 to $9,999 were available for preservation projects in cemeteries listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Arkansas Historic Preservation Program is the agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage responsible for identifying, evaluating, registering and preserving the state’s cultural resources. Other agencies are the Arkansas Arts Council, the Delta Cultural Center in Helena, the Old State House Museum, the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission, the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center and the Historic Arkansas Museum.
