2018 AHPP Historic Property Tour Schedule Announced

Arkansas Historic Preservation Program - Friday, December 01, 2017

The Arkansas Historic Preservation Program’s “Walks Through History” and “Sandwiching in History” tours will visit historic properties across the state during 2018.

In the “Walks Through History” program, which is co-sponsored by the Arkansas Humanities Council, AHPP historians provide free guided walking tours of historic structures and districts across Arkansas. Most tours begin at 11 a.m. on Saturdays. The 2018 schedule includes:

* March 10, Mount Nord Historic District, Fayetteville, co-sponsored by the Washington County Historical Society

* April 14, Columbia Street, Helena-West Helena, sponsored by Main Street Helena

* May 12, Downtown Beebe, co-sponsored by the White County Historical Society

* September 15, Downtown Osceola, co-sponsored by the Mississippi County Historical Society and Mississippi County Museum

* October 13, Heber Springs Commercial Historic District, co-sponsored by the Heber Springs Library and Downtown Heber Springs Network

* November 10, Magnolia Commercial Historic District, co-sponsored by the Magnolia-Columbia County Chamber of Commerce.

The American Institute of Architects offers two HSW continuing education learning unit credits for members who attend a “Walks Through History” tour.

The “Sandwiching in History” tour series targets Pulaski County structures and sites. The noontime series includes a brief lecture and tour of the subject property. Participants are encouraged to bring their lunches with them. “Sandwiching in History” tours will be held in 2018 at the following locations:

* January 5, First United Methodist Church, 723 Center Street, Little Rock

* February 2, Markham Street United Methodist Church (Faith United Methodist Church), 9820 West Markham, Little Rock

* March 2, Block Realty-Couch House, 8 Armistead Road, Little Rock

* April 6, Dr. Charles Kennedy House, 6 Edenwood Lane, North Little Rock

* May 4, Lake Nixon, 18500 Cooper Orbit Road, Little Rock

* June 1, Maumelle Ordnance Works Bunker #4, 4 Willastein Drive, Maumelle

* July 6, William E. Woodruff House, 1017 East Eighth Street, Little Rock

* August 3, National Old Line Building, 501 Woodlane Street, Little Rock

* September 7, Matthews-Storey House, 8115 Ascension Lane, Little Rock

* October 5, Rock Island Argenta Depot, 1201 East Fourth Street, North Little Rock

* November 2, Mary H. Matthews Lustron House, 5021 Maryland Avenue, Little Rock

* December 7, Curran Hall, 615 East Capitol Avenue, Little Rock.

The Walks Through History program is co-sponsored by the Arkansas Humanities Council, which seeks to promote the understanding, appreciation, and use of the humanities in Arkansas. The humanities include the study of history, literature, ethics, philosophy, language, and the various legal, cultural, religious, and folk traditions – past and present - that define the human condition.

The AHPP is the Department of Arkansas Heritage division responsible for identifying, evaluating, registering and preserving the state’s cultural resources. Other divisions are the Arkansas Arts Council, the Delta Cultural Center in Helena, the Old State House Museum, the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission and the Historic Arkansas Museum.
